Understanding Passive Components: Resistors, Capacitors, Inductors

📅 March 20, 2026⏱️ 12 min read🏷️ Education

Passive components form the foundation of every electronic circuit. Unlike active components (transistors, ICs), passive components don't require power to operate and can't amplify signals. This guide covers the three most common passive components: resistors, capacitors, and inductors.

Resistors

Resistors limit current flow and divide voltage in circuits. They're characterized by resistance value (ohms), tolerance, power rating, and temperature coefficient.

Types of Resistors

  • Carbon Film: Low cost, suitable for general applications
  • Metal Film: Better tolerance and stability, low noise
  • Metal Oxide: High power rating, good for high-temperature applications
  • Wirewound: High precision, high power (up to hundreds of watts)
  • SMD Chip: Surface mount, compact size, automated assembly

Capacitors

Capacitors store electrical energy and smooth voltage fluctuations. They're characterized by capacitance (farads), voltage rating, and equivalent series resistance (ESR).

Types of Capacitors

  • Ceramic: Small size, low cost, good for high-frequency applications
  • Electrolytic: High capacitance, polarized, good for power supply filtering
  • Tantalum: Stable capacitance, low ESR, but sensitive to voltage spikes
  • Film: Excellent stability, low loss, good for audio applications
  • Supercapacitors: Very high capacitance, energy storage

Inductors

Inductors store energy in magnetic fields and oppose changes in current. They're characterized by inductance (henries), current rating, and DC resistance.

Types of Inductors

  • Air Core: Low inductance, no core losses, high-frequency applications
  • Ferrite Core: Higher inductance, good for power supplies and EMI filtering
  • Iron Core: Very high inductance, low-frequency applications
  • SMD Inductors: Compact size, automated assembly, power supplies
